The French Data Protection Authority (CNIL) is the regulator for personal data. It ensures the protection of personal data contained in computerised or paper-based files and processing systems, whether public or private.
Established by the Data Protection Act of 6 January 1978, the CNIL works on a daily basis to ensure that information technology serves the public interest and does not infringe upon human dignity, human rights, privacy, or individual
or public freedoms.
It supports professionals in ensuring compliance and helps individuals to take control of their personal data and exercise their rights.
Since February 2019, Marie-Laure Denis, a member of the Council of State, has been President of the CNIL.
