The European School of Materials (EUSMAT) at Saarland University connects international materials science and engineering education with applied innovation, including longstanding Franco-German programmes with the Université de Lorraine. One of its key collaboration is with the deep‑tech spin‑off SurFunction GmbH (www.surfunction.com), translating DLIP/xDLIP laser research into industrial solutions. This successful partnership illustrates EUSMAT’s role in attracting and further educating international talents to foster technology transfer from academic research – especially within the PhD Track program “Materials Science and Engineering” funded by the Franco-German University (DFH-UFA) – to applications of strategic importance, ranging from mobility, energy, to medical and aerospace sectors.
