Tech Beyond the Obvious: Everyday Objects Getting a High‑Tech Upgrade

Tech Beyond the Obvious: Everyday Objects Getting a High‑Tech Upgrade

From AR contact lenses to solar windows, ultrasonic knives, and smart LEGO bricks, everyday objects are being transformed by embedded tech—making VivaTech’s 10-year anniversary the perfect place to see these innovations up close.

Innovation often feels like it belongs in a sci-fi movie, but the coolest changes are actually happening to the things we use every day. We’re moving toward a future where technology is hidden inside the objects we already know and love. From windows in your bedroom to the toys scattered around the living room, everyday items are being redesigned to do things we only imagined were possible.

Can your eyes do more than just see?

The next big step for wearable tech isn’t another watch, it’s a contact lens. AR (Augmented Reality) contact lenses are being built to show digital info right in front of your eyes without needing a heavy headset. These lenses are made from the same hydrogel materials as regular contacts, but they’re embedded with tiny micro-batteries, sensors, and micro-LED displays. Users can control the interface just by looking at specific icons or blinking thanks to eye-tracking technology. A deep-tech company named XPANCEO is already defining this field, showcasing prototypes that use “optical verification” to let users unlock doors or make payments with a glance. Their tech can even enhance human vision. They're developing different prototypes for night vision, zoom, and colorblind aid.

How can windows power our future?

We usually only think of windows as a way to let in light, but what if they could also power your toaster? Solar-powered windows use “photovoltaic glazing” to turn sunlight into electricity. This works by putting a thin, transparent film of solar cells between two panes of glass. European companies like Polysolar (UK) and Onyx Solar (Spain) are making glass that looks normal but acts like a solar panel. Polysolar has developed solutions that reach 12-20% efficiency, which is pretty close to traditional panels (15-22%). This means entire office buildings or homes can create their own energy through their windows, helping the planet while saving money on electricity bills.

Cutting-edge tech in the kitchen

The kitchen is full of tools that haven’t changed much in years, but now the humble chef’s knife is getting a high-tech makeover. While most knives cut based on how hard you push, new technology is making the job effortless. For example, Seattle Ultrasonics has created a knife that uses piezoelectric crystals to vibrate the blade tens of thousands of times per second. This “ultrasonic” tech allows the blade to slide through foods with a fraction of the pressure needed before, showing that even the simplest tools can keep evolving for home chefs.

Building a smarter way to play

Even the classic LEGO brick is getting an update for the digital age. The LEGO SMART Play system uses “Smart Bricks” that have tiny motion and color sensors inside. These bricks can “talk” to you by making sounds or lighting up when they sense movement. They can even recognize Smart Minifigures nearby to trigger special reactions. It’s a great way to keep the fun of building with your hands while adding a touch of digital magic that responds to how you play.

As we celebrate the ten-year anniversary of VivaTech, it’s clear that the best technology is the kind that makes life easier without being in the way. Tech Beyond the Obvious is all about finding hidden potential in the world around us. Over the last decade, we’ve watched these ideas grow from lab experiments into real products. We invite you to join us for this special anniversary to see incredible innovations like these in person. Get your pass to VivaTech 2026 now and see the future for yourself.
